On 19 July, a faulty update from American cybersecurity company CrowdStrike caused widespread “blue screens of death” on Microsoft machines, affecting 8.5 million Windows devices. The impact was significant, with disruptions in various locations and critical infrastructure worldwide. CrowdStrike addressed the issue, clarifying that it did not affect Mac and Linux systems and was not due to a cyber attack. CEO George Kurtz apologised for the outage and emphasised that the problem was resolved within hours of releasing the update. Within hours of the update being released, prominent cyber security expert Troy Hunt said it would develop into “the largest IT outage in history”.
